History of the Manchester Area
Manchester Transport Managers’ Club a month. was formed in 1947 under the Chairmanship of Mr A E Babbs with28 members. Meetings were held at the Denmark Hotel, Moss Side at lunch times once a month, Later the meetings moved to Belle Vue where the Ladies’ Evenings were held.
In 1962 the club reached a peakmembership of 65. In 1965, due to the reorganisation of Belle Vue, the meerings were moved to the Ellesmere Restaurant where the annual Gentheman’s Evenings were held. At the same time the meetings were changed to evenings. The club remained at the Ellesmeere until it was demomlished for redevelopment in 1980.
There then followed a period of flux with various vwnues being tried. The membership at the time fell to an all time low of just 10 members. Tnese members were, however, determined that the Manchester Area was not going to fold and by their own efforts. by 1993 the membership totalled 30. In 1982 the meeting venue was changed to Worsley Old H all and the Ladies’ Evenings to the Cresta Court at Altrincham. The annual Sportsman’s Evening at the Willows in Salford,

Each Area take turns ho;ding the National Chairmanship for the club. Currently the Chairman chamges each year, so with 7nactive Areas this comes round every 7 years.
