The Transport Managers' Club
What's it all about
This elite club was formed in 1943 and now consists of 7 active areas in England.
Â
The ‘club’ is a social club for those engaged in, or allied to, the complex business of road transport in all its forms.
Â
As we strive to increase membership, via personal contact or social media, membership is open to both male and female applicants. If you feel that you and some colleagues could start an area in your part of the Country, please contact the National Secretary for further details.
Â
Full details of the current areas, their meeting places etc. can be found on the relevant area pages.
Aims and Objects of the Club
-  To develop the good fellowship and understanding which is desirable should exist in the Road Transport Industry.
- To provide Club facilities in areas where members may meet socially

National President
Terry Wills (Northampton)
Terry Wills is a Member of the Northampton Area TMC
My career started in Engineering before I started driving for a living. After some years, and a house move to Wellingborough, I decided that I did not wish to spend my married life driving and became a traffic clerk for a large construction company. Over the years promotion took me to Traffic Manager of 4 depots.
Ultimately, I was appointed Transport Manager responsible for the running of 4 Workshops, 200 commercial vehicles and 1200 company cars.
Having been made redundant after 20 years, I moved into Contract Hire and Leasing until my retirement.
National Chairman
Paul Burt (South Lincs)

Â
My passion for mechanics began at a young age. By the age of ten, I could confidently strip and rebuild a carburettor. My father ran our small fleet of Austin commercial lorries and those early hands-on experiences set the foundation for my lifelong career in engineering and transport. After qualifying at Lincoln Technical College, I worked as a service engineer at DAF. I have also had the privilege of working for leading companies such as Scania, Volvo, ERF, and multi-fleet operators. I also spent time as a commercial refrigeration engineer with Thermo King.
Now semi-retired, I run a small business focused on repairing vehicles and plant equipment.
I joined the TMC in the 1990s and currently serve as the national chairman—a position I also held in 2009 and 2017. In 2020, I was honoured with life membership.
National Secretary
Trevor Chapman (Bristol)
Trevor Chapman is a Member of the Bristol Area TMC
My career started as a Junior Clerk at a freight depot on British Rail before transferring under the Government Transport Act of 1969 to National Carriers Ltd under the umbrella of the National Freight Corporation (BRS, Pickfords etc).
My first Management Grade was dual headed – Office/Operations Manager at the NCL Depot outside the Royal London Docks. It was at this time I passed my Class 1 driving test. From there I moved to the Kings Cross Freight Depot where my first role was to organise road trunking movements as the policy then was to reduce the reliance on British Rail to move the parcel traffic generated. When the depot was closed in 1979 I was the Operations Manager (Assistant Branch Manager) with a staff of over 300 personnel.
Having moved to the South West to open a Trailer rental depot I was soon introduced to the TMC and have now been a member for over 40 years. I have held the posts of Bristol Area Chairman, National Chairman, Area Secretary and for the last 22 years, National Secretary.
National Treasurer
Jim Bailey (Manchester)
Jim Bailey is a Member of the Manchester Area TMC
I started my working life in 1959 at the tender age of 15 at a Road Transport Clearing House in Salford working mainly on Manchester Docks during which time ships were in a queue for a berth. After 3/4 years I moved to another clearing house when the Manager started his own company doing the same work and my title then was Manager.
In 1969 having decided I needed to be involved with a company that operated lorries I moved to a Haulage Contractor who ran a fleet of a dozen vehicles as Traffic Manager progressing to being a Director of an associated company until it closed for business in Dec 2000.
I finally finished my working life after delivering cheese with a 3 ton refrigerated van in August 2009.
I started to attend TMC meetings in 1971 as a guest, having to leave the room at AGMs, finally being made a member in 1976 and became Area Treasurer in 1986, a position I still hold.
I was Manchester Chairman twice in 1990/1 and 2009/10 becoming National Chairman in 2002 and awarded Life membership in 2012, during the same year I was appointed National Treasurer a position I still hold.
